Michigan Gets Arabic...Awesome

This is a map of the third most spoken language in a given state.

.

The results are kind of interesting.  There is of course no doubt about what the second most spoken language in every state now is.  But moving away from that subject.

The only result that was surprising is how  many states in the midwest are still German.

Chinese remains the go to on the west coast, which is no surprise.

That the south has gone "Indic" is no surprise although I'm not sure I would count "Indic" as non-English language.  A line from the Bollywood Epic of modern Indian life,  Kuck Naa Noho: "Sorry. No.  We only speak Hindi and a little Punjabi but no English."  That line was not translated to English, it was spoken exactly like that word for word.

Then there were the less pleasant surprises.

I knew that Minnesota had turned itself into little Somalia.  Having been there I can state that that was not a good idea.

And Michigan gets Arabic

Awesome.

Note that most of the Hmong came here in the mid 1970s; same with the Vietnamese (Ft Chaffee in Arkansas was a resettlement center). Two generations later, how much have they assimilated if families still speak the mother tongue at home?

bkm ( wut is the great flaw in the Alt-R? too many chiefs, insufficient Injuns. good thing Vox Day is the Little Injun That Could pull that fine train. { Vox Gayness intensifies } ) said...

the whole point of Amish is to be apart. most of them are technically tri-lingual.

Low German for day to day life.
High German for church services
English for ... dealing with the Englischers.
